May the Fourth be with you!

Star Wars Day (or May the Fourth) is something we love to celebrate at Merlin Events London and with Madame Tussauds London’s exciting immersive Star Wars experience we feel that we’ve really got something to shout about. So to whet your appetite, May the Fourth be with you and here are our top ten facts about the experience that we think are worth raising a lightsabre to:

  1. You’ll find 18 famous Star Wars characters there (some more likeable than others), 12 famous sets, and the whole experience took an incredible 12 months to build.
  2. 180 talented Madame Tussauds sculptors, hair artists and colourists worked hard to create the wax figures, making them unbelievably lifelike.
  3. The total cost of producing the wax figures was a block-busting £2.5 million.
  4. Every hair on each wax figure was inserted by hand – from Yoda’s fine grey wisps to Chewbacca’s mass of brown Wookiee hair – with an average of 10,000 hairs per head.
  5. The artists used over 100ml oil of paint per figure in order to get accurate skin colour for each character, and each figure was painted by hand.
  6. The largest figure is Jabba the Hutt weighing in at a whopping 35 stone. 1.5 tonnes of clay was used to create him and he measures 2.9m long – that’s one big gangster!
  7. At the other end of the scale, the smallest figure is Jabba the Hutt’s court jester, Salacious B Crumb. He’s a mere 41.2 cm tall and his distinguishable ears are 14cm long, whereas Yoda stands at just 66cm tall (“Judge me by my size, do you?”)
  8. And the hairiest? No prizes for guessing, it’s the 2m tall Chewbacca.  We’re talking nearly 1000 hours for a team of 10 expert hair inserters to create his head-to-toe barnet using real yak hair.
  9. The lightsabers featured in the experience were specially created for Madame Tussauds by the team behind the weapons used in the original films – may the fourth be with you!
  10. Yoda’s harsh swampy home on Dagobah is one of the most atmospheric sets in the experience with astonishingly realistic trees, swamp foliage and fog effects. Probably not the best place for a holiday home, but pretty cool nonetheless.
